Henna and Jagua Allergy Information

Allergy Information:Lawsonia Inermis

Our Henna paste is derived from the leaves of the Henna plant (Lawsonia Inermis) along with other all-natural ingredients such as lemon juice, cloves, cardamom, rosehips, lavender oil, etc. We also offer a henna paste consisting of only henna powder (Lawsonia Inermis), lemon juice, and lavender oil for those with more sensitive skin types such as children, expectant mothers, and those with excessive allergies. All-natural henna has been used safely on the skin and hair for thousands of years. Although uncommon, it is possible to have a reaction if you already have an existing allergy to citrus fruits or any other listed ingredients. If you have any concerns or sensitive skin, it is recommended that you try a small skin test before applying a full tattoo. Put a small dab on your skin. If you do not experience any itching or redness, then you likely are not allergic. Henna should not be used on infants or those with G6PD deficiency.

Genipa AmericanaJagua is derived from a fruit (Genipa Americana), and like any plant or fruit, it can cause allergic reactions in some people. If you have allergies to other berries such as blueberries or strawberries, than you should not try jagua at all. If you have any concerns or sensitive skin, it is recommended that you try a small skin test before applying a full tattoo. Put a small dab on your skin. If you do not experience any itching or redness, then you likely are not allergic to Jagua.

Our body art products do not contain any PPD’s or harsh chemicals and should not be confused with “black henna”, which is a term used to describe some of the various chemical-containing products being sold for use as henna or temporary tattoos. It is a good idea to shower and exfoliate your skin before your appointment. Having a fresh layer of skin will help your Henna or Jagua to stain deeper and last longer.

Avoid applying any moisturizers to the skin area before your appointment. This can block the Henna and/or Jagua from staining as dark as it could. Your skin should be clean and free of lotions, oils, or sunblocks of any kind.

  • Hair Removal: For normally hairy areas, shaving before hand is great. But please, do not shave or wax on the day of your appointment. Moisturizers and skin soothers used during the hair removal process can block the Henna and/or Jagua from staining as dark as it could. Your skin should be clean and free of lotions, oils, or sunblocks of any kind. Please allow at least 24 hours or so between shaving/waxing and your appointment.  I suggest at least 2 days for waxing.

Book your appointment so that you are able to follow the AFTERCARE REQUIREMENTS EXACTLY! Do not plan any activities after your appointment that will require a lot of physical activity and be sure to allow yourself plenty of time afterwards. Jagua Tips

Atlanta Jagua Gel HandAllow 30 minutes to an hour to allow the jagua gel to fully dry. Once it is dry it will take on the consistency of a thin film.

Leave the Jagua on your skin for roughly 3-6 hours. Relax during this time. Avoid any kind of activity that will cause you to sweat such as dancing running, or exercising. Sweating with the gel on your skin can cause the lines to blur.

Remove the jagua gel after 3-6 hours by washing and rinsing away with warm running water and soap. Do not scrub the area or use anything that will cause exfoliation. This will shorten the lifespan of your design. Be sure to remove all of the gel from your skin. Any jagua gel left remaining on your skin will continue to stain and can disrupt your design.

• Your Jagua Tattoo will be very faint at first. DON’T PANIC. The design takes anywhere from 24 – 48 hours to develop on your skin. The results of the stain will vary depending on placement on your body as well as skin type. The stain will be darkest on the hands and feet and gradually lighter towards the back and torso.

48 hour jagua stain progression

• Going to sleep with the Jagua gel on your skin is not recommended. Any movement during your sleep may cause the gel to shift. It will stain anything that it touches including your bedding or other parts of your skin and may disrupt your original Jagua design.

After you have removed the Gel, keeping your skin well hydrated by drinking plenty of water and applying a good lotion such as one containing shea or cocoa butter will slow the exfoliation process of your skin and help extend the life of your Jagua Tattoo. You can also apply a little olive or coconut oil to your design anytime just before showering to prevent any heavy exposure to water.

• WHAT NOT TO DO:

  1. AVOID Scrubbing the tattoo area with a loofah or brush or anything that exfoliates your skin. Your Jagua design will fade away as quickly as your skin exfoliates. So any precautions you can take to prolong this will help your Jagua stain to last a little longer.
  2. AVOID soaking your fresh jagua tattoo in a bath, hot tub, swimming pool, the ocean, etc. Long or even short exposure to soaking the skin area in water can cause the jagua to be pulled out of your pores. Normal showering is fine.

 Enjoy Your New Jagua Tattoo!

Henna Tips

1. Leave the henna paste on your skin for at least 6-8 hours. Overnight is even better.

2. Seal dried paste onto the skin by lightly dabbing with cotton ball dipped in lemon sugar syrup. Be careful not to allow the syrup to puddle up. Adding too much could cause the dye to run.

3. HEAT is a friend of henna. Warming your henna design with the henna paste still on your skin will help in achieving a dark stain. You can warm your henna design in front of the fireplace or a space heater, or even use a heating pad or a hair dryer. But please don’t go nuts with this. There’s no need to burn yourself.

4. Apply more sugar-lemon juice syrup. Heat again. Repeat process 3-4 times.

5. As long as the henna paste is moist, it will keep staining…heating makes you sweat and hence moistens the paste.

6. You can unroll cotton balls and stick them onto the sticky henna design. Wrap with a loose sock, toilet paper, or medical bandage…anything will work, to keep the henna paste on the skin and to protect clothing and furniture. If leaving on all night, be sure to keep your henna design WARM ALL NIGHT…when your skin gets too cold, the pores in your skin close and the henna stops staining. You can wrap up your henna design with layers of tissue or cotton balls and then a layer of plastic wrap to retain heat. Just be careful that you do not sweat too much or the plastic wrap will cause your beautiful henna design to smudge. Plastic wrap can sometimes cause you to sweat too much overnight.

7. When removing the henna paste, do not wash off with soap and water. Scrape the paste off gently. You might use a little coconut or olive oil to help taking the paste off. I like to use a plastic card (like a credit card) to help scrape off the paste.

8. Avoid excessive direct contact with water for the next 24 hrs. Keep stain coated with olive or coconut oil to create a barrier.

9. Your henna stain will be a light/bright orange at first and will darken to a deep reddish-brown over the next 48-60 hours.  This gradual darkening of the stain is a sign that the henna paste is 100% natural!

10. You can also just leave the paste on for 4-6 hours and not follow any special steps and still get a good stain. The above instructions are for a SUPER dark stain!

11. After you have removed the Paste, keeping your skin well hydrated by drinking plenty of water and applying a good lotion such as one containing shea or cocoa butter will slow the exfoliation process of your skin and help extend the life of your Henna Tattoo. You can also apply a little olive or coconut oil to your design anytime just before showering to prevent any heavy exposure to water.

Lemon juice + sugar syrup:

Dissolve 3 tsp of sugar in 3 tbsp of bottled or fresh lemon juice.  Adjust quantities to make a thick maple syrup like consistency.

• WHAT NOT TO DO:

  1. AVOID Scrubbing the tattoo area with a loofah or brush or anything that exfoliates your skin. Your Henna design will fade away as quickly as your skin exfoliates. So any precautions you can take to prolong this will help your Henna stain to last a little longer.
  2. AVOID soaking your fresh henna tattoo in a bath, hot tub, swimming pool, the ocean, etc. Long exposure to soaking the skin area in water can cause the henna to be pulled out of your pores. Normal showering is fine.
